...see what I did there?

Holy crap, just got back from work, and read all of the specs on this
joke. $30/month for unlimited data? Awesome... but an over-sized iPod touch without a camera, a screen that matches the Kindle 2 DX screensize (9.7") but at a measly 1024x768 resolution AND has no sunlight/reflective capabilities? Boo.

I do like the price point at $500, but wait, that's for the wifi only model making it useless as a travel-book, and the 3G model starts at $629 for 16gb. That's just ridiculous for a crappy e-reader with traditional screen that is an oversized iPod touch. If you have an iPhone, there's no reason to ever get this.

Also, no video camera means no live video, and no augmented reality which is the new rage in all of the iPhone apps such as Yelp's restaurant locator, or find the nearest subway apps. I even have one which shows you real-time what star constellation you're looking at when you point at it.

I think after the hype dies down, this will ultimately fail. This isn't even supposed to capture the netbook/laptop crowd who still have the ability for ANY OSX/Windows application (not just paid apps from the Apple store), it's just for fanboys who don't realize what they're sacrificing for a status symbol. Hell, there isn't even flash in the web browser, it really is a slightly-larger overpriced iPod Touch. Big disappointment.

tl;dr version:
Big disappointment... traditional LCD means you won't be able to stare at it for more than an hour or two before getting tired, and the resolution is still about half the Kindle. As for the "apps" it's an oversized iPod Touch without the iPhone's camera, and hence misses out on all the cool Augmented Reality apps. Also, it won't run OSX applications, you're stuck with "apps". Plus, the price comparison isn't fair against the Kindle because if you're looking at the 3G included iPad, it's starting at $629, which is about $200 more than the Kindle 2 DX (similar size). If you already have an iPhone, this is a bigger crappier device, if you don't, you're better served with a netbook with a air-fi card running a real OS and real applications.

yeah, huge disappointment;

It was funny watching AAPL drop from 204 to 200 like... right when they showed it lol. Expect the stock to fluctuate all day tomorrow.

No E-Ink
No Camera hence no AR
No removable media
No Flash support (still? WTF!?)

The hardware performance seems really nice, but the product development is bound to fail. The engineers did their jobs, but were thwarted by the marketing pricks.

with as cheap as netbooks are, this is going to be a hard sell to non-apple fanatics.

lolol

Anyways, the only people I see supporting this are posting things like "It's not a phone (iphone does that!) and its not a laptop (Macs do that!). It's for reading things and etc etc etc"

I.e. they basicly list a bunch of functions that an ereader would perform. Except this doesn't have an ereader screen but just a standard lcd with the normal 60hz flicker.

Anyways, even ignoring the ugly design, lack of camera, lack of a gloss/antiglare screen, lack of OS X app support (App Store only!), lack of standard plugs (No USB even, have to use an adapter), lack of fully 3G support (won't work with T-Mobile), lack of storage space (Maximum 64gigs, lack of widescreen (4:3), lack of a camera, and so many other lacks...

No multitasking? Are you serious?

All those things you mentioned are valid, except you can't really call it an ugly design... I think it looks really nice, even if it is mainly a blown up iPod Touch. The only real thing that irks me is no camera. Otherwise, I can actually see this as a nice little addition to a kitchen or something. It certainly looks 10x nicer than a netbook. In the kitchen it wouldn't need 3G so you would get the base model with wifi only, you could use it with google voice or something i bet, and could do video conferencing if it had a camera.

You can't use Google Voice, because it can only run App Store apps, and Google Voice is banned. (Unless it was unbanned and I missed that news)

And yeah, it's ugly, huge bezel ;p

eh agree to disagree on the ugliness lol. I had heard you could use google voice from within the browser now? Haven't looked into it myself, just what I heard.

Also, the main reason Google Voice was banned was because it supposedly ruined the user experience of the iPhone (disables visual voice mail) and competes with the default function of the iPhone which is making calls on ATT. I wonder if they will somehow unban it just for the iPad, since the iPad has none of those features.

Oh, also, I was kind of disappointed there was no mention of any iphone news at this press event :(

I don't know what you guys are looking at lol.. Yes, it has a fat bezel but it doesn't look ugly imo. It looks exactly like the bezel around my macbook's screen, and it frames the picture nicely. I agree it could be a tad skinnier, but it doesn't make it ugly.

I don't think it looks ugly, just looks like a big iphone...which looked alot cooler and more original when they first came out.

I certainly wasn't expecting the iPhone OS on it. I really thought this might be the one Mac OSX product I'd buy. I'd thought Apple would've squared some kinda deal with E-Ink on some radical new passive display and all. Oh well!! WiMo 7 is around the corner. Maybe there's something interesting there.

Seriously, I hope MS gets it shit together when it comes to their mobile OS, I've tested several of the WinMobile phones and their current OS is absolute crap compared to pretty much anything else.
